How to Start a Gym Wear Brand with Private Label (MOQ from 10 pcs)

Starting a gym wear brand used to mean ordering hundreds of pieces per design before you knew whether anyone would buy them. Private label changes that. You choose the styles, fabrics and colours, add your own logo and labels, and a supplier produces the garments under your brand name. With a minimum order of 10 pieces per design, you can test the market with a small, affordable first collection.

This guide walks you through the process from idea to first delivery, based on how private label orders work at Sports Fort.

What private label means for a new brand

Private label means the products are made for you and sold only under your brand. Your customers see your logo on the garment, your neck label, your hang tag and your packaging. The supplier’s name does not appear anywhere. This is different from buying blank stock and adding a print: with private label you decide the fit, the fabric, the colours and the finishing details.

For a new gym wear brand this has three big advantages:

  • Low starting risk: small quantities per design let you test which styles sell before you invest more.
  • A real brand identity: custom labels and packaging make your products look like a finished retail brand, not a printed blank.
  • Room to grow: once a style sells, you reorder it in larger quantities and add new designs.

Step 1: Choose a focused first collection

Most successful new brands start with 3 to 5 core products rather than a full range. Popular starting points for gym wear are:

Pick products that fit your audience. A brand for CrossFit athletes needs different pieces from a yoga or streetwear-gym brand. Look at what your target customers already wear and where you can do something better: a better fit, a stronger fabric, a colour nobody else offers.

Step 2: Decide on fabrics and fit

Fabric is what customers feel first. For gym wear, the most common choices are:

  • Polyester-spandex (lycra) blends for leggings, bras and compression wear: stretch, recovery and a squat-proof feel when the fabric is heavy enough.
  • Polyester mesh and dry-fit fabrics for singlets, shorts and training tops: lightweight and quick-drying.
  • Cotton and cotton-polyester blends for T-shirts, joggers and hoodies: soft and comfortable for lifestyle wear.

If you are unsure, tell us how the garment will be used and we suggest suitable options for your quote. Our size chart page explains how garment measurements work, and for bulk orders measurements can be adjusted to your own size specification.

Step 3: Prepare your branding

You do not need a finished design file to get started. Send your logo, a sketch, or even a reference photo of a style you like. Sports Fort prepares a free digital design mockup of your garment, and you can ask for changes until you are happy. Production only starts after you approve it.

Branding options for private label include:

  • Your logo by screen printing, sublimation, DTF / heat transfer or embroidery (see decoration options)
  • Custom neck labels or printed tagless labels
  • Woven labels and patches
  • Hang tags and custom packaging

For colours, send Pantone codes if you have them. They give a more accurate result than a screen colour. Our Pantone colour guide explains how colour matching works.

Step 4: Order a sample first

Always check a physical sample before you place a bulk order. You can order a single piece, charged at sample price, to check the fabric, fit, stitching and print quality. A sample usually takes 7–10 working days after you approve the mockup, plus shipping time.

When the sample arrives, try it on, wash it, and train in it. Check:

  • Does the fit match your size chart?
  • Is the fabric opaque enough (especially for leggings)?
  • Do the colours match what you approved?
  • Are the logo placement and size right?

If something needs changing, it is much cheaper to fix it now than after bulk production.

Step 5: Place your first bulk order from 10 pieces

Bulk production starts from 10 pieces per design, and you can mix sizes within that quantity. For a first collection, that might look like 10 leggings, 10 sports bras and 10 T-shirts, each in a size spread that matches your customers.

Bulk orders are normally produced in 4–6 weeks, depending on quantity, fabric and decoration. The exact timeline is confirmed in your quote. A 50% deposit confirms production and the balance is paid before dispatch. Payment can be made by bank transfer (T/T), PayPal, Western Union / MoneyGram or international remittance services. You can read the full process on our order handling page.

Step 6: Plan your launch while production runs

Use the production weeks to prepare your launch: product photos (your sample is perfect for this), your online store, social media content and pre-orders. Many new brands open pre-orders with photos of the approved sample, so the first stock is partly sold before it arrives.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Too many designs at once: start small, learn what sells, then expand.
  • Skipping the sample: it is the only reliable way to check fit and quality.
  • Guessing sizes: base your size split on your audience, and keep the size chart on your store.
  • Ignoring shipping and import costs: include them in your pricing from day one. Duties and taxes depend on your country, so check with your local customs authority or courier.
