How to Choose Fabric Weight (GSM) for Custom Hoodies

When you order custom hoodies, one of the first questions is fabric weight, usually given in GSM. The right weight decides how warm the hoodie is, how it hangs on the body and how premium it feels. This guide explains GSM and helps you choose the right weight for your team, merchandise or private label brand.

What does GSM mean?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures how heavy the fabric is: a higher GSM means a heavier, usually thicker fabric. GSM tells you about weight, not quality on its own. A well-made mid-weight fabric can feel better than a poorly made heavy one, which is why checking a sample matters.

Common hoodie weights and what they are used for

Weight range Feel Typical use
Lightweight (about 240–280 GSM) Thin, flexible, breathable Warm climates, layering, training warm-ups, budget merchandise
Mid-weight (about 300–350 GSM) Soft and balanced; the most popular choice Team hoodies, everyday wear, most merchandise
Heavyweight (about 380–450 GSM) Thick, structured, premium Streetwear and premium private label brands
Extra heavy (450+ GSM) Very thick and boxy Statement streetwear pieces, cold climates

These ranges are general industry guidelines. Tell us how the hoodie will be used and where your customers live, and we suggest suitable fabrics in your quote.

Fabric type matters as much as weight

  • Fleece: brushed on the inside, soft and warm. A classic choice for winter hoodies.
  • French terry: small loops on the inside, lighter and more breathable than fleece, popular for year-round wear.
  • Cotton: soft and natural, great for screen printing and embroidery.
  • Cotton-polyester blends: less shrinkage, keeps shape and colour well, often more affordable.
  • Polyester performance fabric: lightweight and quick-drying, suitable for sublimated all-over designs on team warm-up hoodies.

Match the weight to your purpose

Sports teams and clubs

A mid-weight cotton-polyester blend is a practical choice: warm enough for the sideline, easy to wash and keeps its shape. For sublimated designs, choose a polyester fabric.

Merchandise and events

Lightweight to mid-weight hoodies keep costs lower and suit more climates, which helps when you sell to a wide audience.

Private label streetwear brands

Heavyweight hoodies give the structured, premium feel customers expect from streetwear brands. Combine them with an oversized or boxy fit, custom neck labels and quality embroidery or screen printing. See also our distressed hoodie styles.

Weight, decoration and fit

  • Embroidery works best on mid-weight and heavy fabrics, which support the stitches without puckering.
  • Screen printing and DTF work well on cotton and blends at any weight.
  • Heavier fabric changes the fit: a heavyweight hoodie sits more boxy and structured. Check the size chart and a sample before ordering in bulk.
  • Shrinkage: cotton-rich fabrics can shrink slightly after washing, so follow care instructions and allow for it in sizing.

Why you should order a sample

Numbers on a spec sheet do not tell you how a hoodie feels. Ordering one sample piece (charged at sample price) lets you check the weight, softness, fit and decoration before committing to bulk. A sample takes about 7–10 working days after you approve the free design mockup.

Bulk production starts from 10 pieces per design, with mixed sizes, and normally takes about 4–6 weeks depending on quantity. See the full process on our order handling page.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good GSM for a hoodie?

Around 300–350 GSM is the most popular all-round choice. Lighter weights suit warm climates and layering; 380 GSM and above gives a premium heavyweight feel.

Is a higher GSM always better quality?

No. GSM measures weight, not quality. Fibre, knitting and finishing also matter, which is why we recommend checking a sample.

Which hoodie fabric is best for embroidery?

Mid-weight and heavy cotton or cotton-polyester fabrics hold embroidery best.

Can I order heavyweight hoodies with my own labels?

Yes. Private label hoodies can include your logo, custom neck labels, woven labels, hang tags and packaging, from 10 pieces per design.
